Macheda is best remembered by United fans for his unforgettable debut goal against Aston Villa in April 2009. With Sir Alex Ferguson’s side trailing 2-1, the then-teenager was called upon to turn the game around and he did not disappoint by scoring the third goal in injury time after Cristiano Ronaldo netted the equaliser.

Gone are those glory days and current circumstances at Old Trafford are far from ideal. United are enduring a nightmare season, with their attack notably underperforming. United have managed just 30 goals in 26 Premier League matches, leaving them languishing in 15th place – far below their usual standards. To further elaborate, Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee, and Alejandro Garnacho – have only netted a combined total of nine goals in the league this season which highlights the plight of the Manchester club.

WHAT MACHEDA SAID

Despite being in the latter stages of his playing career, Macheda believes he could still contribute to United's cause.

When asked whether he could still make an impact, the Asteras Tripolis forward told : "Now? At 33? I think I could play there. Yes. Do better? I don't know. I must say it's not easy to play for Manchester United now, but I think I could still play there.

“Personally, I like Zirkzee and Hojlund. The club is under pressure. The situation is not easy for any striker, even if you put [Robert] Lewandowski in the team. But as a player, I can see myself playing there at the moment. A couple of games if Ruben Amorim needs me! I know the Premier League level. It's very difficult but I could play there. Why not?"

DID YOU KNOW?

In addition to his offer to help United’s attacking woes, Macheda also expressed his belief in Amorim’s ability to turn the club’s fortunes around.

He added: "I believe yes he can. Amorim has a special connection. He's one coach who can get Manchester United to fight for everything. I like Amorim even if you don't see the results. Maybe sometimes they play bad football. It's difficult because for a club to be successful, you need great players.

"United doesn't have the team to win the Premier League at the moment. They have good players, but if you put any coach in, it wouldn't change a lot."
