As of now, developer CD Projekt Red has no known plans for Cyberpunk 2077 to get another update, but the team has continued to surprise players, so it’s not impossible. After the release of update 2.3 back in July, many Cyberpunk 2077 fans are expecting a 2.4 down the road. There’s no way to know if update 2.4 is set to become a reality, but if it does, there have already been plenty of theories about what it could entail.
One of the most prevalent theories is that Cyberpunk 2077 could get a casino, but this remains to be seen. Whatever a hypothetical 2.4 update has in store, though, CD Projekt Red will hopefully use it as a platform to start planting seeds for the dystopian RPG’s eventual sequel, codenamed Project Orion.
Cyberpunk 2077 Next Update Should Set the Stage for Project Orion's Story
Work on Project Orion is Officially Underway
- Project Orion entered pre-production back in May of this year.
- CD Projekt Red has not revealed a release target.
It will likely be a while before gamers get to see any significant update regarding Project Orion, but that doesn’t mean CD Projekt Red has to avoid generating early hype. There are already a lot of rumors about Project Orion, with one of the most recent being that the sequel could feature a multiplayer mode. CD Projekt Red has kept quiet about the direction the sequel’s story will go, but that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating.
In the past, CD Projekt Red has hidden hints about future updates in other Cyberpunk 2077 content, like comic book spin-offs, so it wouldn’t be out of character to tease Project Orion’s story with a 2.4 update. Whether it be through characters or brand-new side quests, a fresh Cyberpunk 2077 update could be the perfect way to bridge the gap between the two games, whether they are directly connected or not. It would simply serve as a subtle, but meaningful, way to bring the two narratives together.
If theories are true and the hoped-for 2.4 update introduces a casino area to Night City, it could also potentially tie into Project Orion, if the sequel plans on utilizing this kind of space. Just as Phantom Liberty confirmed the existence of a moon colony, the casino ads found throughout Night City after the 2.3 update could be hinting at how Project Orion intends to expand its scope. Theories about Project Orion leaving Night City are nothing new, but each update may be planting small location seeds that won’t be harvested until the sequel finally arrives.
Whether it be through characters or brand-new side quests, a fresh Cyberpunk 2077 update could be the perfect way to bridge the gap between the two games.
Cyberpunk 2077‘s 2.3 update added four new vehicles, AutoDrive, and an updated Photo Mode.
At This Point, Cyberpunk 2077 Needs to Look Toward the Future
The world of Night City is dense and filled with surprises around every corner, and even though CD Projekt Red could easily update it for years to come, it may be best for both the game and the developers to ease players into the future of the series. Cyberpunk 2077 is almost five years old now, and unless there’s a secret second DLC in the works, each update may begin to feel less substantial if it doesn’t enrich the story further.
With CD Projekt Red busy with both The Witcher 4 and Project Orion, it will probably be a few years before the latter is showcased in any major way, so until then, Cyberpunk 2077 is hopefully used as a way to hint at what the franchise has in store down the road.
